The temple was lost to the sands of time for thousands of years, literally. it was buried, with only the topmost portions being visible, until the early 1800's. The Egyptian government and UNESCO decided to co-operate in order to save these temples from the flood. The Great Temple and the Small Temple were moved, cut into blocks and relocated to a safe location beyond the rising waters. Today thousands of people come here every year to see the fruits of those labors. the interiors of Abu Simbel's temples are astounding. The scale of the buildings and their detailed decoration leaves most visitors in awe. The Great Temple is adorned with statues of Ramesses himself, over 60 feet high, that guard the entrance.
